Keep Your Distance Online dating safety experts, that is, people who study this behavior and have recommendations to make to ensure your safety, say it’s better to decide ahead of time how close of a proximity you want an online dating partner to be.

Do you want to put in your profile that you’re looking for someone close by, or within 25 to 50 miles, or in another state?

Seeing so many people's inner thoughts and desires on Tinder has given me an interesting insight into what people want from dating and hookups in general. I think I wasn't good at meeting people in a dating mindset to start with.

Have you learned anything from your Tinder experiences? What do you have to lose, the five calories it takes you to type out a hello with your thumb?

In this week's Sex Talk Realness, speaks with three twentysomething women about their (very different) experiences with Tinder. I realized I could spend hours swiping and some of the "DTF" or similar messages I was getting were creeping me out because that's not what I was on it for. Woman A: During that period I used it daily, if not multiple times a day. Woman A: Sometimes it was just a way to amuse myself by playing hot or not, or by trading silly messages with someone I never planned to meet up with. I found it dangerously useful for meeting men who lived in my neighborhood in NYC, which was really convenient when I was single and is annoying now that I see someone I met on Tinder every time I go to brunch. In five months I saved 10 dudes in my phone as "[First Name] Tinder." I maybe met up with eight of them? I like meeting new people and I don't see the point in using the app if you just want to text a stranger! Woman A: I had great luck and met lots of charming, smart, handsome dudes. Woman B: One of my most remarkable dates was with a man who invited me to the food court at his office building for a lunch date, and spent most of the time telling me about how he wanted to buy me beautiful lingerie and watch me try it on.

Read what MEN really think about using Tinder here. Woman B: Once or twice a week, depending on whether I'm actively having a conversation with someone or just browsing through. Sometimes it was a more mercenary approach — I wanted to get laid, or I was just restless and wanted to get out of the house. Woman C: Yes, one guy because he was really keen to meet. Our date ended when he took out his phone and showed me a picture of his penis. It was the first date I'd ever been on so I have limited means of comparison, but I think the mistake was that we spoke on Whatsapp (the Tinder UX is too annoying) for six weeks before we met.

Woman B: I've had a threesome with a couple I met on Tinder. Is their bio witty, and not just about working hard and playing hard? A lot of people fill up their description with things they don't want instead of things they do. For instance, I saw one guy who said he was into BDSM and I think this might be valuable info for someone, just not me. I met a choreographer that just moved here from the Midwest, an Australian lawyer in New York for a month, an Ivy-League dropout who spent half of each month in Paris...

There’s little time to get all the things done in a day that have to be taken care of, let alone find the time to meet someone new.

From relative obscurity just a few short years ago, there are countless websites today that are advertised on TV, radio, in print and billboard ads and on the Internet. But it’s just this easy access that often has a darker side to it.

There are some inherent dangers in online dating that all women need to be aware of, especially if they intend to make use of this new way of dating. Are women taking more risks by engaging in online dating?

Hiding behind a made-up moniker could be a rapist, a child molester, a wife-beater, a criminal, or an otherwise unsavory character. You wouldn’t if you’d read some of the horror stories posted on some sites that seek to reveal the dangers and the risks posed by use of online dating services.

The person you think is a straight-forward, honest individual who is sincerely interested in you may, in fact, be a cheating spouse. It’s easy to obtain a secret email address, create an online persona, even arrange for a post office box for mailing correspondence, all in an attempt to cloak a true identity.
